"Key Concerns and Considerations in Pharmaceutical Sciences
and Technology: South-East Asian Perspective"
Dr. B.C. Roy College of Pharmacy & Allied Health Sciences, Durgapur, and West Bengal India (BCRCPAHS) is devoted to offer quality pharmaceutical education in India to make globally competent pharmaceutical manpower. The institute started its journey in 2005 under the aegis of Dr. B.C. Roy Engineering College society, Durgapur and offers UG, PG and PhD degree in pharmaceutical sciences. The institute successfully created eligible graduate and post graduate pharmacy professionals who are currently working in industries, academic institutes and regulatory bodies all over the nation. The institute imparts world class pharmaceutical education through handpicked faculties from industry and academia with qualifications and experience gathered in India and abroad. The faculty maintain industry and research collaborations with national and international organizations. Currently the college is engaged in performing various research projects such as drug delivery, degradation analysis, synthetic and phyto-pharmaceutical projects, microbial toxins, bioinformatics, pharmaceutical biotechnology together with small scale technology transfer projects under the guidance of connoisseurs of faculty of this college. The institute encourages scientific and professional upliftment of its students and staff members through publication of in-house research journal “Pharmawave” (ISSN: 2249-3425), seed grants for research, entrepreneurship cell and organizing conference, workshop and seminars. As a reward of such support, students and faculties are being awarded of various prestigious awards, national and international publications with procuring grants from various state and central bodies.
According to WHO, South East Asian Countries today faces threat both in communicable and non-communicable diseases. Last few years outbreaks of communicable diseases like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and avian influenza have shown serious public health concerns with enormous potential impact on social and economic development. Studies indicate that this region has a high number of HIV/AIDS cases and new infections are still occurring. Among the other communicable diseases, Malaria and Dengue pose a wide range of challenges in this region (in particular to our state West Bengal). Drug resistance and counterfeit drugs are now posing a major public health threat with potentially devastating consequence beyond the Region. Currently, India in particular and South Asian countries commonly, are facing a “health crisis” with rising rates of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity and other non-communicable diseases. The prevalence of diabetes in the Region is expected to double over the next 15 years. The global tobacco epidemic is the second major cause of all deaths and is the fourthmost common risk factor for diseases worldwide. In the South-East Asia Region, every year about 2.3 million people die prematurely from tobacco-use-related disease. On the basis of current scenario, Dr. B. C. Roy College of Pharmacy and AHS is planning to organize an international conference with the aim to address alarming heath concerns in the areas of both infectious and non-infectious diseases that impose both socio and economic developments. Interventions are needed to improve access to emergency treatment and affordable medicines. Most of the developing countries rely on herbal medicines that are cheap and affordable. The conference could highlight the advances in herbal medicines, nanotechnology, biotechnology and bridge the gap between the Pharmaceutical Industries and Academics.
